The pointed, bell-shaped cap of the stinkhorn is covered with a black-green spore-bearing layer—a slime that smells repulsive. The odor, reminiscent of a carcass, can be smelled in the forest from a distance of up to twenty meters. It attracts insects, which then spread the spores and help the mushroom reproduce. The mature mushroom is inedible, but the young, egg-shaped fruiting bodies are edible. In the past, they were used for ritual purposes- the phallic shape of the stinkhorn stimulates the human imagination.
